You would never know it was as hot as blazes outside based on the long sleeve, embroidered Giambattista Valli dress Nicole Kidman wore to the Met on Monday. But many people, as you well know, make certain sacrifices for fashion, comfort being relatively high on that list.

Racing all the way uptown to be prompt, at 6 p.m., might be slightly lower on the “I did it for fashion” totem pole, but most of the guests, including Tory Burch, Ivanka Trump, Vera Wang, Allison Sarofim, Lisa Perry, Annelise Peterson and Amar’e Stoudemire, were right on time to an event hosted by Vogue and the Costume Institute on Monday in which Ms. Kidman joined Vogue editor Hamish Bowles in a conversation about film and costume in the Temple of Dendur.

After the event, everyone split for cocktails, giving us the opportunity to tell Mr. Stoudemire how much we liked “Trainwreck” in which his costumes are pretty much a hospital gown and basketball uniform.

“You liked that?” said Mr. Stoudemire. “It’s funny, right?”
