In a community event put together by Nike’s DYCD program on September 7th, 2011, Amar’e Stoudemire was able to pull off a surprise visit to the children of the Polo Grounds Community Center in Harlem with the help of NYC’s The Children’s Village non-profit center.

Amar’e stressed to the kids the importance of staying in school and being educated. He made sure the kids understood that Knowledge Is Power and that the more educated they are, the more swag they would have. Rather than hanging around with neighborhood troublemakers, he suggested to read instead.

Amar’e, Nike DYCD, and Scholastic made sure all the children in attendance left with all of the necessary back to school supplies to start the new school year off strong. The kids received backpacks (embroidered with Amare’s signature and a “Knowledge Is Power” quote) stuffed with books, writing utensils, and notebooks. The Polo Grounds Community Center also received brand new sporting equipment to help with their after school activity programing.
